The East Anglian fens, 1087.
Aelf Fen lies out where the black water meets the huge sky. Reeds and willow, eels in the mud, wildfowl on the meres, and water meadows that flood from autumn to spring.

Outsiders tell fearsome tales of the place. The fen folk let them talk. They know the safe ways across the marsh, and the Normans do not — the Conqueror himself lost an army trying to cross it.Lassair is thirteen, an eel-catcher’s daughter, newly apprenticed to her aunt the healer. She can find lost things with a willow wand, and hidden paths nobody else can see. Sixteen generations of her family have lived on this fen, and she knows all their stories. Then the Conqueror dies. At her sister’s wedding Lassair meets a handsome stranger. Months later he comes back, and asks her to help him find a treasure five hundred years old. Men will kill for it.

That is how it starts. A second body in her granny’s grave. A dead nun from her sister’s abbey. A mob on the Cambridge quayside. Hrype, who casts the runes and trusts nobody. Rollo, the new king’s spy, who may love her.

England after the Conquest, from the side of the conquered. Marsh, mist and old magic.
