Showcased at the first Lloyds Bank National Theatre Challenge 1989. Hard To Swallow has become a popular play across the globe. It is based on the life and death of an anorexic girl, Catherine Dunbar, told mainly through the words of Catherine and her family. It charts Catherine’s uneven battle with her illness and her families difficulties in coping with all that anorexia means.
Reviews
"This play reaches moments of almost unbearable intensity... naturalistic scenes flow seamlessly into sequences of highly stylised theatre... such potent theatre."
Vera Lustig - The Independent
"A model of its kind ... elegantly structured, highly informative, and imaginatively theatrical."
Ann McFerran - Stage and Television Today
