Anne McCaffrey’s Centenary
We’re remembering the great Anne McCaffrey on what would have been her 100th birthday.
Born on April 1st, 1926, Anne was a prolific science fiction and fantasy writer, who was most famous for her Dragonriders of Pern series. She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction in 1968 and the first to win a Nebula Award a year later. Her novel The White Dragon became one of the first science-fiction books to appear on the New York Times Best Seller list (1978).
Anne wrote around 100 titles over the course of her career, including novels, short story collections, and non-fiction. She was a trailblazer who significantly reshaped the science fiction and fantasy landscape, particularly for women.
In 2005 the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named Anne its 22nd Grand Master, an annual award to living writers of those genres. She was inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame the following year. Anne died in Ireland in 2011, leaving a family, devoted fans and a huge legacy behind.
Happy 100th Birthday, Anne.
