Carol Rocamora’s translation of Anton Chekhov’s IVANOV, which is currently being performed by the Classic Stage Company in New York, has had its run extended into December. The production stars Ethan Hawke and Joely Richardson and is directed by Austin Pendleton.
“Fascinating early Chekhov. Ethan Hawke EXUDES A SOLAR ENERGY that has made him a formidable stage presence. Joely Richardson finds a lovely broken poetry, giving A GEM OF A MULTILAYERED PORTRAITURE. The production also features two expertly carved studies in eccentricity by George Morfogen and Roberta Maxwell.” – The New York Times
“AN ENERGETIC, SHARP REVIVAL. Ethan Hawke’s potent energy fuels the show. Joely Richardson is remarkable; Juliet Rylance, luminous.” – The New York Post
“One of the most DEEPLY SATISFYING theatrical unions in recent years is the mingling of Anton Chekhov, director Austin Pendleton and Classic Stage Company. Pendleton and his LUSCIOUS CAST layer the lights and abysses of Chekhov with masterly complexity.” – Newsday
“Austin Pendleton’s production has the BEAUTIFUL AND ELUSIVE SPIRIT of his prior outings at Classic Stage Company.” – Variety
“ETHAN HAWKE SOARS. Juliet Rylance is OUTSTANDING. Pendleton and cast illuminate the Chekhovian mix of humour and pathos.” – Associated Press
